An Invitation to Join the Resilient Household Project
These are challenging times. Unemployment is high, the economy is not “recovering,” and large areas of the country have suffered from natural disasters – drought, fires, floods and tornadoes. The global financial system is being strangled by debt. World food prices are at record highs, and peak oil, climate change, and limits to fresh water, soil and other resources are increasingly being felt as the world population reaches 7 billion.
The world is a tougher place in which to live than it used to be, and is likely to become more so. We need to make our households more resilient – able to withstand the energy, environmental, and economic shocks that are coming. But what to do first, and how to do it? Insulate your house, store food and water, add solar energy, change jobs…. It is hard to decide where to start or what to do next.
This is where the Resilient Household Project comes in. Neighbors working together, sharing knowledge and experience, sharing tools and labor, saving money by buying in bulk, and having fun.
If you aren’t sure if the problems the world – and Berea – faces are severe enough to require you to take action to prepare your household, there are books and other resources described at www.sustainableberea.org that can help you to learn more and make an informed decision.
On the other hand, if you are ready to take concrete actions to make your household more resilient or have already started and want to join with like-minded people, the next meeting of the Resilient Household Project will be:
Wednesday, July 27th
7:00pm
Community Room
Madison County Public Library
319 Chestnut Street, Berea
Information: 985-1689 or info@sustainableberea.org

At our next meeting, we will hear from everyone to see how they’re doing and see what it is we can do to keep moving forward. It also sounds like there may be several new people, so we may add them to some teams or get them working on something new. I will be posting more on the website over the upcoming days.

When is the next meeting?
